CUPC was founded in 1873, making it one of the oldest surviving polo clubs in Europe. It is run by students, with the support of a senior committee of alumni. There are currently some 45 members, ranging from those who 'dabble' to more experienced players. The club is based at Haggis Farm Polo Club, on the Barton Road just outside Cambridge - a 15 minute cycle from town. The facilities available to us here are a 100m x 50m floodlit arena, two grass pitches and a clubhouse, with ideas for further development in the pipeline. We have a full time groom, Nat, a part time groom, Louise, and a club lorry, to enable us to get the most out of our ponies. More information on the facilities at Haggis Farm Polo Club can be found at www.haggisfarmpolo.com. During the arena season, usually October to March although it is very much weather dependent, we offer daily lessons with some of our more experienced players, twice-weekly lessons with our coach, 3-goaler Dean Lines, and chukkas and matches at weekends. During the grass season, which is usually the majority of our summer term, as well as playing at Haggis we also play chukkas and matches at Suffolk Polo Club (www.suffolkpoloclub.org.uk), and our A team play some training matches at Frolic Farm in Lode (www.frolicpoloclub.co.uk). Every December we offer members the chance to go for ten days of intensive training at Fabio Lavinia's club in Capilla, near Pilar, just south of Buenos Aires. Fabio is an Argentinian 3-goaler based at Frolic Farm, and he helps us out with coaching, umpiring, pony hire etc when he is in the UK during the summer. This trip always proves hugely successful and is invaluable in developing skills for all those who attend. |
