The Club was founded in 1873 by the Hon John Fitzwilliam, making it one of the oldest surviving clubs in Europe.

The first polo match between Oxford and Cambridge Universities first took place on Bullingdon Cricket Grounds in November 1878, the following summer the first Varsity Polo Match was played at Hurlingham Polo Club and is one of the oldest continuing fixtures in the Western World’s polo calendar. The annual Varsity Polo Match has been played annually since then, breaking only during the two World Wars. During this time, there were a number of distinguished players on both sides.
